Ambassador Zhang addresses Toronto Chinese Canadian Organization Dinner
2011/02/26

On February 22, His Excellency Zhang Junsai, Ambassador of the People's Republic of China to Canada, addressed the welcoming dinner hosted by the Confederation of Metropolitan Toronto Chinese Canadian Organization (CMTCCO) in Markham.

Over ten Canadian federal, provincial and local government officials attended the dinner and delivered speeches. Also present were more than 500 representatives from the overseas Chinese community and students from over 70 organizations under CMTCCO.

In his speech, Ambassador Zhang reviewed the gigantic achievements China made last year, saying 2010 was the final year of China's Eleventh Five Year Plan. In this period, China faced extreme complexities in its economic and social development, frequent natural disasters, serious problems caused by the international financial crisis and profound changes home and abroad. In spite of all these challenges, the Chinese Government remained calm and worked hard to increase China's comprehensive national strength. China's GDP grew by 10.3 percent in 2010. With limitless opportunities and challenges ahead, China still has a long way to go.

Ambassador Zhang spoke highly of China's relations with Canada, saying that the two countries' relationship grew fast after Prime Minister Stephen Harper's visit to China in 2009 and President Hu Jintao's visit to Canada last June. China-Canada two-way trade reached a record high of 36 billion US dollars, a 20 percent increase from 2009. More Chinese companies are looking to do business in Canada. China Investment Corporation recently set up its very first overseas office in Toronto.

Ambassador Zhang commended the overseas Chinese and students for their contribution to China's modernization and China-Canada friendship. Ambassador Zhang noted that overseas Chinese lent a hand in the time of need when China was struck by massive earthquakes in Sichuan, Qinghai and landslides in Gansu. Overseas Chinese shared China's joy at the Beijing Olympics, China's 60th anniversary, Shanghai World Expo and Guangzhou Asian Games. Overseas Chinese are not only connected to China by blood. Their support is indispensable to China's impressive progress and the growth of China-Canada relations.

Ambassador Zhang's speech was warmly received by the audience. Many were greatly touched and inspired. The audience wished for a better future of China-Canada relations and later joined Ambassador Zhang and Mme Yin Guomei for photo-ops.
