Embassy Spokesperson's Remarks on National Post Report on Xinjiang Uyghur Autonomous Region
2009/02/23

Q: What is your comment on the article titled "Alienated in Xinjiang" published on National Post of Feb. 17?

A: It is a groundless report, which distorts the basic facts of the situation in Xinjiang Uyghur Autonomous Region. Xinjiang has been an inalienable part of China from ancient times as early as 60 B.C. Xinjiang is a multi-ethnic region with 47 ethnic groups altogether. People of all ethnic groups in Xinjiang enjoy equally the fundamental rights and freedom, including religious freedom,  protected by the Chinese Constitution and other laws since the establishment of the Xinjiang Uygur Autonomous Region on October 1, 1955. Great economic and social developments made in the region through the years have resulted from the joint efforts of every and each of the ethnic group and benefited to them all.

The report is also misleading in speaking for the terrorists, who are members of the East Turkestan Islamic movement (ETIM), listed as a terrorist organization by the United Nations Security Council 1267 Committee. The ETIM  poses a threat not only to China but also to the world.
