On November 19, 2021, Chinese Ambassador to Canada Cong Peiwu gave an interview to OMNI Television on the current China-Canada relations and the spirit of the sixth plenary session of 19th CPC Central Committee.

Ambassador Cong said, it has become more necessary for China and Canada to enhance mutual understanding under the current circumstances. The original aspiration and mission of the CPC has always been pursuing happiness for the people and rejuvenation for the nation since its founding 100 years ago. Under the leadership of the CPC, China has brought about the two miracles of rapid economic growth and enduring social stability. The CPC Central Committee summarized major achievements and historical experience of the Party over the past one hundred years at the sixth plenary session of 19th CPC Central Committee concluded not long ago. One aspect of the valuable historical experience accumulated over the past one hundred years is maintaining a global vision. China will continue its firm commitment to peaceful development, actively promote the building of a community with a shared future for mankind, and contribute wisdom and strength to the progress of mankind.

Ambassador Cong noted, it has become more important for China and Canada to adhere to mutual respect and equal treatment. Canada conspired with the U.S. on illegally detaining Ms. Meng Wanzhou for almost three years, which seriously violated the above-mentioned principles of mutual respect and equal treatment, and seriously undermined China-Canada relations, as well as Canada’s own interests. Facts have shown that only by upholding mutual respect and equal treatment can both countries enjoy sound and stable bilateral relations. Canada should reflect upon and draw experience from the incident, bear in mind the general picture of China-Canada relations, properly handle sensitive issues related to China, and do things that can help improve and facilitate bilateral relations. China will continue to take strong measures to firmly safeguard its interests.

Ambassador Cong said, our two countries now enjoy more room for bilateral mutually beneficial cooperation. China’s development brings opportunities rather than threats to the world. The two countries share broad space in trade and economic cooperation, and have much in common in such aspects as combating COVID-19, coping with climate change and promoting sustainable development. Canada should meet the Chinese side half way, bring China-Canada relations back on track, and create conditions to unleash cooperation potential in various areas.

Ambassador Cong also answered questions regarding the 2022 Olympic Winter Games.

The interview was aired on OMNI on November 22, 2021.
