Ambassador Lu Shaye Holds Reception Celebrating the 20th Anniversary of Hong Kong's Return to China

On June 20, Ambassador Lu Shaye held a reception in Fairmont Château Laurier in Ottawa, honoring the 20th anniversary of Hong Kong's return to the motherland. Around 250 people attended this reception including Ahmed Hussen, Minister of Immigration, Refugees and Citizenship Canada, Senator Joseph A. Day, Co-Chair of Canada-China Legislative Association (CCLA) and Tan Geng, CCLA Co-Chair and Member of Canadian Parliament, Donald Bobiash, Associate Deputy Ministers of Global Affairs Canada, Lois Mitchell, Lieutenant Governor of Alberta, foreign envoys in Canada, overseas Chinese academics and media representatives.

Ambassador Lu highly praised Hong Kong's remarkable achievements in political, economic and social fields in the past 20 years and pointed out that the policy of "one country, two systems" has been a great success in Hong Kong, with stable economic growth, a happy life for people, smooth operation in political system, increasingly improvement of the level of rule of law, and more prominent international status. The Chinese central government has effectively exercised its overall jurisdiction over the Hong Kong Special Administrative Region, pushed forward democratic development in Hong Kong step by step, resolutely curbed and cracked down the "Hong Kong independence" forces and safeguarded social stability in Hong Kong and the authority of the Basic Law. And Ambassador Lu wished Hong Kong a better future.

Senator Day expressed in his speech that after Hong Kong's return to China, it continues to maintain stable development and build closer ties with the world. Canada attaches great importance to developing its relations with China and hopes that Hong Kong will play a greater role in boosting Canada-China relations.

The Embassy arranged the photo exhibition celebrating the 20th Anniversary of Hong Kong's Return to China at the reception, drawing attention from all guests. Books and videos related to China's economic and social development provided by the Embassy were also widely acclaimed by all guests.
