Ambassador Lu Shaye Attends Tim Hortons Ottawa Ice Dragon Boat Festival

From February 9th to 10th, Happy Spring Festival--Second Tim Hortons Ottawa Ice Dragon Boat Festival was held at the Dow’s Lake in Ottawa, the capital city of Canada. Ambassador Lu Shaye, Catherine McKenna, Minister of Environment and Climate Change of Canada and other political heavyweights from China and other countries attended the opening ceremony on the evening of February 9th and the races on February 10th.

At the opening ceremony, Ambassador Lu warmly congratulated on the opening of the Ice Dragon Boat Festival and highly affirmed the significance of establishing this festival in Canada. He expressed that the Ice Dragon Boat Festival represents the perfect combination of Chinese and Canadian culture as it integrates the culture of Chinese New Year, dragon boat and winter sports of Canada as well as consists the elements of competition, entertainment, tourism and leisure. Minister McKenna hailed the Ice Dragon Boat Festival in her speech as the highlight of the cultural exchanges between Canada and China and the best demonstration of Canada-China friendly relations.

In this Ice Dragon Boat Festival, the Chinese Embassy in Canada once again teamed up with Global Affairs Canada, which once again showed the spirit of bilateral friendship through joint cooperation to create a bright future together. Led by Ambassador Lu, the combined team of Chinese and Canadian diplomats achieved a good result.

Ambassador Lu also gave on-site interviews to media including CCTV, Xinhua News Agency and the China News Service, reiterating the importance of holding the Ice Dragon Boat Festival and extending New Year greetings to personages from various circles of China and Canada.

Established under the strong support and guidance of the Chinese Embassy in Canada, the Tim Hortons Ottawa Ice Dragon Boat Festival is an innovation of China in the celebration of the “Happy Spring Festival” activity in Canada. It becomes an instant hit among the people in North America once launched. In this year’s event, the number of teams from various regions of North America reached 100 and the number of team members reached 1500. Attracting100,000 audience, this event has become the biggest highlight of winter festivals in Ottawa and the world’s largest ice dragon boat festival.

Minister Counsellor of Cultural Affairs Zhao Haisheng and Minister Counsellor of Educational Affairs Yang Xinyu of the Embassy and others attended relevant activities of the Festival.
