1. Prime Minister Justin Trudeau Pays Official Visit to China and Holds Second China-Canada Prime Ministers' Annual Dialogue

From December 3 to 7, Prime Minister Justin Trudeau paid an official visit to China and held the 2nd China-Canada Prime Ministers' Annual Dialogue with Premier Li Keqiang. It is the second consecutive year that Prime Minister Justin Trudeau visited China since he assumed office. President Xi Jinping and other Chinese leaders met with Prime Minister Justin Trudeau. Both sides issued the China-Canada Joint Statement on Climate Change and Clean Growth, deciding to establish two ministerial-level dialogues between respective departments of environment and clean energy. The two sides also signed documents concerning bilateral cooperation including the Memorandum of Understanding concerning the Canada Learning Initiative in China, the Action Plan for Energy Cooperation, the Memorandum of Understanding on the Importation and Exportation of Food Products. Prime Minister Justin Trudeau visited the headquarters of Sina and inaugurated the China-Canada Year of Tourism in 2018. Besides, Prime Minister Justin Trudeau attended the opening ceremony of the 2017 Fortune Global Forum in Guangzhou and delivered a keynote speech.

2. Then Governor General David Johnston of Canada Visits China

From July 10 to 14, the then Governor General David Johnston of Canada paid a state visit to China, with stops in Chongqing, Guiyang and Beijing successively. President Xi Jinping and Premier Li Keqiang met with David Johnston respectively. Both sides signed bilateral cooperation documents in culture, sports and other fields. It is David Johnston's second visit to China as Governor General of Canada since 2013.

3. The Second Annual Meeting of between Chinese and Canadian Foreign Ministers Held in Beijing

On August 9, Foreign Minister Wang Yi and Foreign Minister Chrystia Freeland of Canada held in Beijing the 2nd annual meeting between Chinese and Canadian Foreign Ministers. Both sides exchanged in-depth views on strengthening China-Canada relations and practical cooperation in various fields, and discussed international and regional issues of common interest.

4. China and Canada Hold Second China-Canada High-Level National Security and Rule of Law Dialogue

On June 22, the 2nd China-Canada High-Level National Security and Rule of Law Dialogue was held in Ottawa. Secretary-General of the Commission for Political and Legal Affairs of the CPC and Deputy Secretary-General of the State Council Wang Yongqing, and National Security and Intelligence Advisor to the Prime Minister Daniel Jean of Canada co-chaired the dialogue, and issued a joint statement. Relevant departments of both sides held group talks concerning practical cooperation in security and rule of law respectively under the framework of the high-level dialogue.

5. China and Canada Send New Ambassadors to Each Other

On March 2, the newly-appointed Chinese Ambassador to Canada Lu Shaye presented credentials to the then Governor General David Johnston of Canada. On March 17, the newly-appointed Canadian Ambassador to China John McCallum presented credentials to President Xi Jinping.

6. China and Canada Conduct Joint Feasibility Study on China-Canada Free Trade Agreement and Exploratory Discussions

Four meetings about the joint feasibility study on China-Canada free trade agreement and exploratory discussions were held successively in February, April, July and September. Both sides exchanged in-depth views on the joint outcome documents of the joint feasibility study and exploratory discussions, reached broad consensus, and made positive progress, laying a sound foundation for completing the joint feasibility study and exploratory discussions at an early date.

7. Canada Establishes Seven New Canadian Visa Application Centres in China

Canada established 7 new Visa Application Centres (VACs) in Chengdu, Hangzhou, Jinan, Kunming, Nanjing, Shenyang and Wuhan. Together with the existing VACs in Beijing, Shanghai, Guangzhou, Chongqing and Hong Kong, Canada has established 12 VACs in China.

8. The Motion of Designating Nanjing Massacre Commemorative Day Passed by Ontario Provincial Parliament

On October 26, Canada's Ontario Provincial Parliament passed a motion designating Nanjing Massacre Commemorative Day, making Ontario the first region whose provincial parliament adopts a motion of designating Nanjing Massacre Commemorative Day among Western countries. On December 9, oversea Chinese from all walks of life in Ontario, Canada jointly held a memorial meeting on the 80th anniversary of the Nanjing Massacre, with the theme of "remembering history, praying for peace". More than 1,000 representatives, including important members of the government at the confederation, provincial and municipal levels in Canada and representatives of the Chinese communities as well as communities of other ethnic groups were present.

9. Gateway'17 SME Summit Successfully Held in Canada

On September 25, Alibaba Group held the Gateway' 17 SME Summit in Toronto. Canadian Prime Minister Justin Trudeau and Executive Chairman of Alibaba Group Jack Ma attended the summit and delivered keynote speeches. Both sides had a fireside chat. Ambassador Lu Shaye, Canadian Foreign Minister Chrystia Freeland, Minister of Small Business and Tourism Bardish Chagger, Premier of Ontario Kathleen Wynne, Toronto Mayor John Tory and others were present. More than 3,600 representatives from business circles in Canada participated in the summit.

10. Chinese Cultural Elements Shine in the 150th Anniversary of the Founding of Canada

2017 marks the 150th anniversary of the founding of Canada. Many celebrations full of Chinese cultural elements added brilliance to the event, enjoying huge popularity among the public in Canada and effectively facilitating the development of friendly bilateral relations. From January 11 to the late February, the activity of "Happy Spring Festival" was conducted in Canada, with nearly 100 cultural celebrations under the brand of "Happy Spring Festival" held in various places of Canada. The Ice Dragon Boat Festival, the first of its kind created by North America, attracted about 100,000 spectators. From June to October, the botanical garden departments of Beijing and Shanghai donated two large parterres respectively named "Auspicious Dragons Bring Happiness" and "Nine Lions Present Auspiciousness" to the International Garden Festival in Canada, attracting more than one million viewers. In July, the Chinese mechanical machine Long Ma made its tour in Ottawa, attracting more than 750,000 spectators to watch the performance on site within 3 days. In October, the "Beijing Week" kicked off in Ottawa. It is the largest sister-city exchange program between China and Canada in 2017, attracting nearly 20,000 visitors to participate in relevant interactive activities.
