Ambassador Lu Shaye Delivers a Keynote Speech at the Montreal Council on Foreign Relations

On November 27th, Ambassador Lu Shaye attended the luncheon hosted by the Montreal Council on Foreign Relations upon invitation and delivered a keynote speech focusing on China’s position on China-US relations, the Belt and Road Initiative and other topics. Nearly 400 people attended the luncheon, including the former Premier Daniel Johnson of the Province of Quebec, Canada, government officials from Quebec and Montreal, and representatives from all walks of life such as Bombardier Inc., SNC-LAVALIN, Canada-China Business Council and Montreal University.

In his speech, Ambassador Lu expounded the truth behind the trade war launched by the US with China recently, and refuted false accusations made by the US and other countries against China’s economy. He stressed that China’s development depends entirely on the diligence and wisdom of the Chinese people, and that China conforms to the trend of economic globalization, firmly supports the multilateral trading system with WTO at its core and supports the construction of an open world economy. Ambassador Lu also cited vivid examples to show the positive outcomes of China’s mutually beneficial cooperation with relevant countries since China put forward the Belt and Road Initiative five years ago and encouraged all sectors of Canada to view China and China’s development in an objective and fair way so as to further strengthen exchanges, enhance mutual trust and work together with China to promote the steady development of the strategic partnership between the two countries.

After the speech, Ambassador Lu also answered questions from the audience on China-Canada economic and trade cooperation, people-to-people exchanges and other issues, and gave an interview to the Canadian Broadcasting Corporation, Le Devoir and other media.

Chen Xueming, Consul General in Montreal, attended the luncheon and gave some remarks.
