Remarks of the Spokesperson of the Chinese Embassy in Canada on the Globe and Mail's Smearing against China's efforts to fight against COVID-19
2020/04/17

Recently, the Globe and Mail published a signed article by two commentators titled "the Chinese Communist Party's culture of corruption and repression has cost lives around the world", groundlessly claimed that China fabricated information, failed to accurately report data and "exacerbated the world's COVID-19 health and systemic crises". The article is full of hatred and prejudice against the Communist Party of China (CPC), and even agitate "the Community of Democratics" to hold China accountable throuth legal initiatives. The above report is completely inconsistent with the facts. We deplore and strongly oppose that.

The timeline of China's response is very clear. On December 27th, 2019, Zhang Jixian, Director of the Department of Respiratory and Critical Care at Hubei Hospital of Integrated Traditional Chinese and Western Medicine, reported the first three suspected cases. This triggered epidemiological investigation on December 29th by relevant CDCs and hospitals in Hubei and Wuhan. On December 30th, Wuhan Municipal Health Committee issued the Urgent Notice on the Treatment of Pneumonia of Unknown Cause. On December 31st, the National Health Committee sent a team of experts to Wuhan to look into this matter. On January 3rd, 2020, China began sending officially updates to WHO and other countries, including Canada. On January 8th, the pathogen of the virus was preliminarily identified. On January 11th, the China CDC uploaded five full genetic sequences of the virus on its website and shared the information with countries of the world and WHO. On January 23rd, China adopted unprecedentedly comprehensive, thorough and strict measures, including putting Wuhan under lockdown. Recently, some Canadian media have been spreading similar untrue remarks. We have reiterated the facts in detail, and punctured the relevant lies in a comprehensive manner. Those who accuse China of being untransparent and question WHO's inaction are unjust. Recently, the journal Science published a paper by researchers in the United States, the UK and other countries saying that China's control measures worked by successfully breaking the chain of transmission and bought other countries valuable time.

COVID-19 is the public enemy of mankind. In the face of this sudden global public health crisis, all countries, including China, are victims. How could anyone speak of such a thing as accountability? The "political virus" of stigma is more dangerous than the disease itself. Those who try to ascribe the so-called "criminality" to the CPC are viewing China with ideological prejudice, and the "political motive" behind that is doubtful.

We advise those persons to focus on their domestic epidemic prevention and control efforts. To shift blames won't help mitigate the epidemic at home, nor will it help the international cooperation in prevention and control of the pandemic.
