Remarks of the Spokesperson of the Chinese Embassy in Canada On Canadian Leaders' Erroneous Comments related to China

On December 20, Canadian Prime Minister unwarrantedly accused China once again in the year-end interview on the cases of Michael Kovrig and Michael Spavor, and wantonly claimed that China used “coercive diplomacy”. Canadian National Defence Minister also made irresponsible remarks on those cases, claimed that China flouted international rules, norms and treaties, and made groundless accusation on China’s developing relations with Asian, African and Latin American countries. The Chinese side expresses strong dissatisfaction and firm opposition to this.

I would like to reiterate that in accordance with law, the Chinese authorities arrested and prosecuted relevant Canadians because they are suspected of crimes endangering China's national security. Chinese judicial organs handle the cases independently according to law and the relevant Canadians’ lawful rights have been guaranteed. In contrast, the Canadian side acted as an American accomplice regardless of the political nature of the Meng Wanzhou incident, and arbitrarily detained Ms. Meng, an innocent Chinese citizen who violates no Canadian law for over two years. In addition, the Canadian side has been engaged in ganging up in the international arena in an attempt to pressure China, which completely violates the basic norms of international relations and is the real coercive diplomacy that will never succeed. It is sheer distortion of facts for the Canadian side to claim that China has used "coercive diplomacy".

I also would like to emphasize that China is committed to the path of peaceful development, upholds multilateralism, and firmly supports the UN-centered international system and international order underpinned by international law. China have joined almost all inter-governmental international organizations and signed over 500 multilateral treaties. China upholds the equality of all countries, big or small, strong or weak, rich or poor, and develops friendly relations with other countries on the basis of the Five Principles of Peaceful Coexistence. China is always a builder of world peace, contributor to global development and guardian of international order. This has won positive acknowledgement by vast majority of the international community.

We urge the Canadian side to take China's position seriously, reflect upon its wrongdoing, stop its smears and attacks against China, and not go further down the wrong path. At the same time, the Canadian side should immediately release Ms. Meng and ensure her safe return to China so as to avoid continuous harm to China-Canada relations.
