Remarks of the Spokesperson of the Chinese Embassy in Canada on the Comment by Canadian Foreign Minister regarding Hong Kong Affairs

On January 6, foreign minister of Canada made unwarranted comments on the Hong Kong Police’s normal performing of theirs duties, grossly interfered in Hong Kong affairs and China's internal affairs. The Chinese side expresses its strong dissatisfaction and firm opposition over this.

China is a country with rule of law and Hong Kong is a society with law and order. Recently, the Hong Kong Police arrested some people suspected of attempting to subvert the state power as set out in Article 22 of the Law on Safeguarding National Security in Hong Kong. The Hong Kong police handled cases according to law, which should not be smeared and brook no interference of any country. Without national security, there would be no long-term prosperity and stability in Hong Kong. The Hong Kong Police fulfill their duties in accordance with law to safeguard Hong Kong’s security and stability and guarantee the normal rights and freedoms enjoyed by Hong Kong people.

It must be pointed out that Hong Kong is China's special administrative region, and Hong Kong affairs are purely China's internal affairs. Any attempt to undermine the principle of "one country, two systems" or the prosperity and stability of Hong Kong will be firmly opposed by all Chinese people including our Hong Kong compatriots, and the attempt to interfere in Hong Kong's affairs or China's internal affairs will never succeed. We urge the Canadian side to reflect upon its wrongdoing, mend its misguided ways, and immediately stop meddling in Hong Kong affairs and China's internal affairs in any form.
