Remarks of the Spokesperson of the Chinese Embassy in Canada on Canadian Foreign Minister's Erroneou Statement Related to Cases of Michael Kovrig and Michael Spavor
2021/03/19

On March 17, the Foreign Minister of Canada made unwarranted comments in a statement on China’s handling cases of Michael Kovrig and Michael Spavor in accordance with law, vilifying that “detentions are arbitrary” and proceedings “lack of transparency”. This is just fact-distorting. The Chinese side expresses its strong dissatisfaction and firm opposition.

I would like to stress once again that China is a country with rule of law. Michael Kovrig and Michael Spavor were arrested and prosecuted in accordance with law for suspected crimes undermining China's national security. China's judicial authorities have been dealing with the cases independently and ensuring their lawful rights, including consular visits to them. On the one hand, the Canadian side claims that it upholds the rule of law, but on the other hand, it makes irresponsible remarks with regards to China’s handling relevant cases in accordance with law. How hypocritical and arrogant! When it comes to arbitrary detention, Ms. Meng Wanzhou has been arbitrarily detained for over two years despite the fact that she hasn't violated any Canadian law. This is arbitrary detention in every sense of the term.

We urge the Canadian side to earnestly respect China's judicial sovereignty and stop making irresponsible remarks and interfering in China's handling of cases in accordance with law in any form. It is imperative for the Canadian side to immediately correct its mistakes and release Meng Wanzhou and ensure her safe return to China.
