Remarks of the Spokesperson of the Chinese Embassy in Canada on US Chargé d'Affaires' Erroneou Statement Related to Cases of Michael Kovrig and Michael Spavor
2021/03/20

On March 18, the U.S. Chargé d'Affaires of the U.S. Embassy to Canada made unwarranted comments in a statement on China's handling cases of Michael Kovrig and Michael Spavor in accordance with law. The Chinese side expresses its firm opposition.

I would like to stress once again that Michael Kovrig and Michael Spavor were arrested and prosecuted in accordance with law for suspected crimes undermining China's national security. China's judicial authorities have been dealing with the cases independently and ensuring their lawful rights, including consular visits to them. China's judicial sovereignty brooks no interference.

Meng Wanzhou incident is plotted by the United States with the purpose to bring down Chinese high tech enterprises. Ms. Meng Wanzhou has been arbitrarily detained by the Canadian government at the request of the US side for over two years despite the fact that she hasn't violated any Canadian law. This is arbitrary detention in every sense of the term and Meng Wanzhou incident is a grave political incident. The United States is the culprit and Canada is the accomplice. The international community sees this very clearly.

We urge the US side to reflect upon its wrongdoing, end the hypocritical performance and immediately stop the hegemonic act of interfering with China's judicial sovereignty.
