On the evening of June 7th, the Chinese Embassy and the Ottawa Symphony Orchestra (OSO) co-hosted the 24th Fête Champêtre of OSO at the official residence of the Chinese Ambassador Zhang Junsai. About 200 guests from the political, business, cultural and diplomatic circles of Ottawa, including His Worship Mr. Jim Watson, Mayor of Ottawa, Mr. Russell Mills, Chair of the National Capital Commission, were present at this annual fund-raising party.
Ambassador Zhang delivered his welcoming remarks at the party, expressing his appreciation for OSO's outstanding artistic achievements as well as its long-term contribution to the community with free performances for the students in the capital region. The Ambassador also recalled the joint success achieved by OSO and the visiting Chinese art troupes together, such as the China Radio Troupe and Chinese Spring Festival's Gala Performances Troupe, in 2008 and 2009. He encouraged the two sides to provide more opportunities for both peoples to appreciate the essence of arts and cultures of each other, thus promoting the mutual understanding and friendship, by implementing the cultural agreements signed and renewed recently and staging cultural exchange events during 2013 and 2014 in each other's country as announced during Prime Minister Harper's visit to China in February, 2012.
The President of OSO, Ms. Martha Hynna, expressed her gratitude to Ambassador Zhang for his generosity in providing the beautiful official residence as the venue of the event. She said the proceeds from this event will be used for supporting the new season of OSO as well as music teaching at local high schools and colleges.
Following their remarks, musicians from OSO played joyful music for the guests and the Chinese Embassy feasted them with delicious Chinese food and snacks.
Ambassador Zhang was also interviewed by journalists from both local and Chinese media.
