On August 9, 2017, Foreign Minister Wang Yi and Foreign Minister Chrystia Freeland of Canada held in Beijing the 2nd annual meeting between Chinese and Canadian Foreign Ministers.

Wang Yi said that China-Canada relations have maintained sound development momentum in general. Chinese Premier and Canadian Prime Minister successfully achieved mutual visits within one month last year, injecting robust impetus into the development of China-Canada relations. China stands ready to make joint efforts with the Canadian side to seize the current important opportunities and open up a new golden era for bilateral relations.

Wang Yi expressed that China is willing to enhance communication and intensify coordination with Canada to push China-Canada strategic partnership for constant and new development. Both sides should maintain exchanges at high level and across all levels, make good use of relevant dialogue mechanisms, reinforce strategic planning for bilateral relations, take promoting the construction of China-Canada Free Trade Zone as the main line, and deepen mutually beneficial cooperation in various fields. Both countries should take jointly fighting against transnational crimes as the goal and expand cooperation in anti-corruption and judicial enforcement. The two countries should properly handle disputes and sensitive issues in the spirit of mutual respect, reinforce coordination in multilateral fields, and uphold the international system with the UN at its core, so as to jointly cope with global challenges.

Chrystia Freeland said that Canada attaches great importance to developing Canada-China relations, and regards China as a priority direction of its diplomacy. The Canadian side stands ready to, together with China, maintain high-level exchanges, actively discuss launching the negotiation on Canada-China Free Trade Agreement, reinforce exchanges and cooperation in various fields and promote bilateral relations for greater development. Canada adheres to the one-China policy, understands China’s stance and concern over the Taiwan and Xizang-related issues, and will properly handle them. Canada values China’s role in global affairs and is willing to conduct cooperation, jointly safeguard international order and facilitate free trade with China.

Both sides also exchanged views on international and regional issues such as the Korean Peninsula nuclear issue.
