Ambassador Zhang Junsai's official visit to Quebec

Ambassador Zhang meeting with President of the National Assembly Yvon Vallières

February 16-17, His Excellency Zhang Junsai, Ambassador of the People’s Republic of China to Canada and Mme Yin Guomei paid an official visit to Qubec at the invitation of Honorable Jean Charest, Premier of Quebec.

Ambassador Zhang and Mme Yin met with Premier Jean Charest, President of the National Assembly Yvon Vallières, Minister of International Relations and Francophone Monique Gagnon-Tremblay, Minister of Tourism Nicole Ménard, Minister of Economic Development, Innovation and Export Clément Gignac, Leader of Parti Quebecois Mme Pauline Marois, respectively. Ambassador Zhang was briefed by local Government officials and the two sides exchanged views on China-Canada relations and China’s cooperation with Quebec in various fields.

On February 17, Ambassador Zhang and Mme Yin Guomei attended the official welcoming luncheon hosted by Mr. Robert Keating, Assistant Deputy Minister of the Ministry of International Relations.

Ambassador Zhang and Mme Yin’s visit was highly anticipated and warmly greeted by a flag-raising ceremony at the Quebec National Assembly and introduction by the President to all Assembly members.

During his meetings with local government officials, Ambassador Zhang pointed out that Quebec is Canada’s largest province. With rich natural resources and a vibrant economy, Quebec plays a vital role in Canadian politics and economy. The Chinese Government highly values its friendly relations with Quebec and has conducted effective cooperation with Quebec over the years in education, science and technology, trade, energy, tourism and culture. China’s Xi’an and Shanghai are sister cities with the Quebec City and Montreal. Quebec and China’s Shandong Province has also been working closely. Ambassador Zhang expressed his belief that the two sides will build on the sound basis for development, further tap their potential, expand mutually beneficial partnership in all fields and enhance China’s friendly relations with Quebec and other parts of Canada.

Officials from the Quebec Government said that they highly value Quebec’s relations with China. Quebec and China have had good exchange and cooperation with China in various fields. China is Quebec’s second largest trade partner, fifth largest export market and second biggest source of import. Quebec’s trade with China takes up 1/6 of Canada’s trade with China. The Quebec Government is positive towards strengthening its cooperation with China and is ready to expand partnership with the Chinese side in education, science and technology, trade, commerce, energy, tourism, culture and environment.
